Payal Kapadia wins the historic Grand Prix Award at Cannes Film Festival 2024

The Cannes Film Festival is currently underway, marking its 77th year as an iconic 2 week-long cinematic event. The occasion showcases a plethora of A-list celebrities and attracts renowned fashion moguls who gracefully charm the red carpet at this esteemed gathering. In this post, we will highlight the finest ensembles worn by these renowned celebrities and delve into the significant influence of women in film on the festival.

The Cannes Film Festival was founded in 1946 by the French Minister of National Education and Fine Arts, Jean Zay. It aimed to provide a platform for celebrating excellence in cinema and fostering cultural exchange. Over the years, the festival has attracted top actors, directors, and producers from around the world, making it one of the most prestigious events in the film industry. In addition to its focus on cinema, Cannes has also become equivalent with high fashion. The red carpet at the festival is a showcase of glamour and style, with celebrities and attendees donning couture gowns and designer suits that set new trends and inspire fashion lovers globally. The Cannes Film Festival's influence on fashion is undeniable, as it continues to shape the glamourous landscape and push boundaries in the world of haute couture.

a series of movements.

Judith Godrèche and her crew of “Moi Aussi” - gesturing the #MeToo movement

Amongst the highly accomplished directors in the past year, the film "Barbie" captured our attention, with Greta Gerwig shining as its creative force. Renowned for her work in "Little Women" and "Lady Bird," Gerwig made history as the first female American director to be selected as the president of the Cannes Film Festival jury this year. She stated- “ I’ve been making movies for almost 20 years” / “ Every year I cheer because there are more women directors. We’re not done yet, but we are certainly moving in the right direction. “ While I concur that we are making progress in the correct path, it is crucial to acknowledge the existence of misogyny as a significant factor that cannot be overlooked.

The event glimmered with the abundant presence of women gracing the red carpet alongside the stars. However, controversy and notable snubs were glaringly evident, casting a shadow over the overall atmosphere of the evening. In all honesty, there have been significant and longstanding challenges within the prominent film industry in France that have, for a considerable period, remained concealed from the public eye. The Actor-director Judith Godrèche has emerged as one of the most outspoken voices of the French #MeToo movement, Judith and her crew of her short film “Moi Aussi” made a powerful statement as they stood on the steps of the red carpet, all of them covering their mouths. This symbolic gesture was a poignant representation of the silencing experienced by survivors of sexual abuse.

Cate Blanchett and her Palestine dress by Jean Paul Gaultier.

Cate Blanchett became the center of attention as discussions revolved around her apparent Pro-Palestinian stance, which she may have expressed through a fashion statement at the red-carpet event. I believe she displayed remarkable courage by boldly showcasing both her fashion statement and political endeavour. Whilst attending “The Apprentice” premiere, Blanchett wore a Jean Paul Gaultier satin dress with colour block that represent the colours of Palestine- with the help from the red carpet. Made by Colombian-French designer Haider Ackermann, influenced by culture. Following her acting life, Cate is well known for her activism and championing women’s rights. She has also been very vocal about a ceasefire in Gaza and has joined the “Artists for Ceasefire” list, which is a group of 60+ actors and artists in signing a letter to the US President, urging a complete ceasefire in the Palestine genocide.

In our post before this, we also spoke on Bella Hadid’s gracious efforts to support Palestine by a wearing Keffiyeh dress, a scarf pattern commonly known for Palestine and the middle east. A more common use of protest for a Free Palestine. We speak more of Bella’s admiration on Palestine in our “Bella Hadid - For the love of fashion” post.

Cannes Crazy Bodyguard

Amongst all this commotion, altercations with a Cannes bodyguard came into fruition when stars of the likes of Kelly Rowland, Lim Yoona and Massiel Taveras all had one thing in common with the bodyguard, They found themselves quickly ushered away from the carpet, barely getting to spend more than a fleeting 5 minutes under the spotlight. Being a POC, we all can see the subtle racism formed within the clips surrounding the incident. Kelly stated- “There were other women on that red carpet who did not look like me that were not scolded, or pushed off, or told to get off. I set my boundary. I stood my ground and she stood hers.”

Eyewitnesses reported a heated exchange between the bodyguard and attendees, leading to a tense atmosphere. Despite efforts to contain the situation, the incident escalated quickly, causing a stir amongst the guests. Authorities were called to intervene, and the matter is currently under investigation to ascertain the full extent of what transpired on the evening of the event.
